ABOUT
FUNATSUYA opened on 31 March 2024 as a sister shop of Funatsuki which has been serving customers for over a hundred years with high quality gifts.
We specialise in Japanese vintage crafts while serving customers Matcha green tea in a traditional style.
You will be amazed to find the atmosphere changes so much once you are off the busy main shopping street. Please enjoy the tranquil moments away from busy everyday life. For each customer, we make fresh tea using the water boiled in a traditional cast iron pot used for tea ceremony. It is believed that the hot water from this traditional method tastes sweet and mild.
We offer OMOTESENKE tea ceremony demonstration followed by actual tea-making by customers in traditional and correct way. Please book in advance. The booking can be made either with a table and chairs or a Japanese-style room.
Reservations forWe have vintage in-house Shinto shrines, furniture, Japanese lacquerwares, ceramics, which have been passed down the generations within Miyajima households. We also have vintage lamps and other craftworks which have been collected by those who have strong association with the shops. I hope you can see, touch and enjoy our very special items.
During the end of Edo era and the beginning of the Meiji era, European lamps were imported to Japan. It is believed that the Japanese Imperial family started using the western lamps and gradually they spread to ordinary people. It must have been revolutionary at the time but vintage lamps are now often used as part of house interiors.
We have a selection of about 100 year old antique lacquerwares which were used for special occasions such as New Year and weddings. They are in very good condition and can still be used to serve food.
Our ceramics selection includes hand painted vintage pieces which are well preserved with the original colours. They are suitable for everyday use as well as special occasions. We feel sure that will embellish your dinner tables.
Please enjoy other Japanese and crafts we also stock. All our vintage products will bring alive the past times when they were in daily use. However, some of their uses and origins remain obscure. Please enjoy discovering our wonderful objects.
Funatsuya is located six minutes on foot from Miyajima pier. Follow the signs to Omote Sando Shopping High Street. After our sister gift shop Funatsuki on your right, please turn left into a narrow passage. You will see a banner “Matcha Tea”.
